A small business owner owed a huge amount of money to a loan shark in a small Italian town hundreds of years ago. The loan shark was an elderly, unattractive man who happened to be enamored with the business owner’s daughter.
He decided to make the businessman a contract that would clear away the debt he owed him entirely. But there was a catch: we would only forgive the debt if he married the businessman’s daughter.
This suggestion was met with a look of horror, to say the least.
The loan shark said that he would put two pebbles, one white and one black, into a bag.
After that, the daughter will have to reach into the bag to pick a pebble. The debt would be erased if it was black, so the loan shark would then marry her. If it was white, the debt would be forgiven as well, but the daughter would no longer be obligated to marry the loan shark.
The loan shark leaned down and picked up two pebbles while standing on a pebble-strewn road in the businessman’s backyard.
The daughter found that he had picked up two black pebbles and dropped them all in the bag as he was picking them up.
He then instructed the daughter to choose one from the package.
The daughter had three options: she could have done nothing, she could have done something, or she could have done something.
Refrain from removing a pebble from the bag.
Remove all the pebbles from the bag and reveal the loan shark’s deception.
Pick a pebble from the bag, even though it was dark, and sacrifice herself for her father’s rights.
